Announcement from Officer in Charge

It has come to my attention that rumors are circulating that there was a robbery at the Changes Clothing Store in the Village of Rhinebeck.  This is inaccurate and I would like to set the record straight.  Per NY Penal Law, Robbery is defined as follows:

S 160.00 Robbery; defined.
Robbery is forcible stealing. A person forcibly steals property and
commits robbery when, in the course of committing a larceny, they use or
threaten the immediate use of physical force upon another person for
the purpose of:
  1. Preventing or overcoming resistance to the taking of the property
or to the retention thereof immediately after the taking; or
  2. Compelling the owner of such property or another person to deliver
up the property or to engage in other conduct which aids in the
commission of the larceny.

Nothing noted above was reported to have occurred at Changes Clothing Store on October 16, 2023.  Merchandise was shoplifted from the store.  Shoplifting is a larceny offense.  Unfortunately, it is a very common larceny that occurs all over the state and country.

The Village of Rhinebeck Police Department is actively attempting to identify the individuals involved and is following up on several leads. Please understand that at times, in order to protect the integrity of our investigation, we cannot release information to the public. With that being said, the public is always welcome to contact the Police Department and we will do our best to put your minds at ease.   The Village of Rhinebeck Police continue to prioritize the safety of our village residents and if we felt your well-being was at risk, we would send out a notification.

Thank You,

Sgt Peter Dunn
